How can I manage devices by groups?

MetaAccess allows IT/Security administrators to manage devices by categorizing them into groups with different security level. This will not only help administrators in reducing time spent in device management but also help ensure compliance

1. How do I create a new group?

  1. Log into the MetaAccess console

  2. Navigate to Inventory > Groups

  3. Click on the CREATE NEW GROUP button

  4. Fill in all required information: group name, which policy you would like to apply to this group (a default policy is applied if no policy is specified), allow devices to join this group automatically. You should check the option "Allow devices to join automatically this group" to allow devices enroll to this group via installation process. Otherwise, devices can only be assigned to the group if administrators manually add them to the group

  5. Then hit ASSIGN DEVICES TO GROUP button

  6. Select devices you would like to add to the group.

  7. Hit CREATE button, you will be asked for the PIN to make any changes.

Note: Device assignment to a group might fail because of several reasons:

  • If the device was deleted by the admin

  • If the end-users uninstalled the agent on their devices

2. How do I update a group?

  1. Log into the MetaAccess console

  2. Navigate to Inventory > Groups

  3. Go to group details of a group you want to update

  4. To change policy for the group, click on "Change Policy" and select a policy you want to apply to the group. You need to confirm your change with your PIN. Note that MetaAccess will re-assess device status for all devices in the group when you do this change.

  5. To update group name, click on pencil ( images/download/attachments/29935777/image2017-6-27_16-42-3.png ) icon. Note that you couldn't change group name of the Default group which MetaAccess creates for your account by default.

  6. To update description, click on "Edit" which locates on the right of the description.

3. How do I add devices to a group?

Option 1: Manually add devices to a group from the 'Groups' menu

  1. Log into the MetaAccess console

  2. Navigate to Inventory > Groups

  3. Go to group details of a group you want to add devices

  4. Click on ADD DEVICES TO GROUP

  5. Select devices you would like to add to the group

  6. Click ADD DEVICES TO GROUP button at the bottom of the page.

Option 2: Manually add devices to a group from the 'Devices' menu

For Windows and macOS

  1. Log into the MetaAccess console

  2. Navigate to Inventory > Devices

  3. Select devices you would like to add to a group

  4. Select the action "Assign to Group" in the Actions dropdown

Option 3: Automatically enroll devices to a group via installation process

This option allows administrators to distribute installers to their end-user and provision devices to a specific group automatically.

  1. Log into the MetaAccess console

  2. Click on "ADD DEVICES"

  3. Check on "Automatically assign devices to a group" and select what group you wish devices join to

  4. Click on a download link to get installers for your endpoints

In this case, MEM will generate an installer with a groupId in the installer's filename. If an end-user alternates the installer's filename with different group id and the groupId doesn't exist on your account, the device will be added to the Default group.

For Android and iOS:

The groupId should be entered when a device enrolls to an account. You can look up a groupId of a group by go to download page of that group (follow steps in Option 3 for Windows and macOS devices)

4. How do I get a list of devices in a specific group via oAuth API?

With API, calling GET https://gears.opswat.com/o/api/v3/devices?access_token=accesstoken with filter.group_id parameter in the request body.
